Another medal at ACRAs

The lightweight varsity men have done it again, placing 2nd this past weekend at ACRAs. They lost to the University of Michigan by a mere 3 seconds, with a final total time of 6:45.7. The boat was composed of third years John Kohler, Sasha Ostapenko, Kenny Oshita, and Emily Lo (coxswain), and second year Dhruv Kedar. This is the same boat that took third at Dad Vails the previous week. See a video of their final race here.

The rest of the team also had excellent performances! The varsity women’s boat placed third in heats to compete in semi-finals and then fifth to go on to the petite finals. Their boat, composed entirely of lightweights, competed in the heavyweight category and represented UChicago Crew well. The varsity women’s boat was made up of third year Aurelie Merlo, and second years Sophia Arabadjis, Emily Chen, Sarah Granger, and Anna Arsenault (coxswain).

Both of our novice boats had good races as well. The novice men’s boat, made up of first years John Fallon, Alex Murray, Hans Glick, Matt Xu, and Garrett Chado (coxswain) fought their way into semi-finals and moved on to the petite finals. The novice women’s boat, filled by third year Krista Kaput, and first years Erin Ferguson, Won Huh, Kathy Stewart and Rachel Richman (coxswain) moved on from heats to petite finals where they came in second in their heat. It was a great weekend for racing for everyone!

Don’t forget, the alumni row and BBQ is coming up this weekend! If you weren’t able to sign up on-line, please shoot me an e-mail if you are able to attend. The BBQ will be held at the point on Saturday from 2-4pm. The row will be held at our rowing site on Sunday morning, 8:30am-11am. In true UChicago fashion, the crew team has taken an imaginative turn in their fundraising efforts, entering in a $10,ooo photo contest sponsored by Chipotle restaurants. They are in the finals and currently in the lead! Voting ends on Sunday, May 22. It will take you about a minute or so and will benefit the team.

Team takes medal at Dad Vail Regatta

GREAT NEWS! The UChicago men’s varsity lightweight four placed third at the Dad Vail Regatta with a time of 6:46.56. This is the first Chicago boat to medal at Vails in around 30 years. I have heard rumors that the last boat(s) to do this may have been back in the late seventies or early eighties. Way to go guys!!! This is a major accomplishment and something worth celebrating at the annual Row & BBQ this year. Remember, that’s June 4-5 this year.

Alumni Row & BBQ: June 4-5, 2011

Time to start making plans to attend the annual Alumni Row & BBQ, which will take place in Chicago June 4-5. The BBQ will be held in the afternoon on June 4, with the row the following Sunday morning. We’ve got some big news to announce and the launch of a major fundraising campaign. For the Class of 2001, this will be… our 10 year reunion. Are you coming? Hope to see you there!

MACRA LOCATION CHANGED TO GRAND RAPIDS!

Just a quick note to any alumni who might be thinking of heading to Indianapolis this weekend to cheer the team on: MACRAs has been moved to Grand Rapids, MI due to weather making Indianapolis’ site unrowable. They will be racing in Bass River Park, Ottawa County. There is no revised schedule as of yet, but races will probably start around 8am.

2011 Virtual Team Challenge starts tomorrow!

The Concept 2 Virtual Team Challenge starts tomorrow! Last year we fielded a team of 16 alumni for a total of 1.2 million meters. This year’s aim is to reach a mere 2 million. Every bit counts, so sign up today and get your erg on. Registration closes Jan 15. Make sure you’re registered for it as part of the U Chicago Alumni Crew.

We can’t reach 2 million without you. Hop on that erg and fight the battle of the bulge!

Alumni Row and BBQ recap

Thanks to everyone who came out this weekend for making yet another great crew alumni reunion. I was happy to see some new faces this time around. The row had to be held off until Sunday but it was well worth the wait. The weather was gorgeous and perfect for a row downtown. I’ll try to get some pictures posted soon.

Alumni Row & BBQ schedule

Don’t forget the Alumni Row and BBQ, Saturday June 5th! If anyone else is planning on coming, and hasn’t contacted Chelsea yet, please see the previous post.

Here is the schedule for Saturday. This schedule is pretty set, but if the pick up time/site arrival time changes, I’ll post an update ASAP:

Alumni Row

7:45am pick up at Henry Crown

8:10am arrive at the site

8:30am on the water

9:15-9:30am off the water

10am back on campus

There will be donuts, bagels and coffee provided.

Alumni BBQ: 2pm at the point. There will be burgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers, salad, and chips.

If you need transportation to the site, let Chelsea know so there are enough vehicles for pick up. Otherwise, the team’s site is located near 2800 S. Eleanor Street, on the corner of S. Loomis and S. Eleanor. If you need further direction, please email.

For the BBQ, if you park near the Shorleland, 5454 S. Shore Drive, and walk under the tunnel towards the point, we will be near one of the fire pits with food!

Events Update

Dear Alumni,

Hello everyone, here are a few updates/reminders/things to put in your calendars:

May 17^th (Monday)-Boat Naming

This year, the UChicago Crew team bought two brand spanking new Pocock fours. The varsity squads have had a great year rowing in them, with the women and men respectively, placing 3^rd and 5^th at the Head of the Charles, 2^nd and 3^rd at URAs, and 2^nd and 3^rd at MACRAs, among many other notable finishes.

These wonderful boats have yet to be named. Thanks to two anonymous donors, one of our Pocock fours will be named in honor of former coach Amanda Carson. We are planning on having the boat naming ceremony Monday, May 17^th at 7:30pm. Location is still TBD, but will most likely be on the main quad as we have done for past namings. If you are interested in attending, or would like to donate money, please e-mail me so we can have a head count. There will be cake!

June 5^th (Saturday)-Alumni Row and BBQ

The Saturday of Alumni Weekend we will be having an alumni row in the morning followed by a BBQ at the Point in the afternoon. What better way to spend the morning than rowing on the Chicago River! We will be taking out mixed eights of alumni and current members of the team with coaches following in a launch. Our site is located near Eleanore and Loomis but we will be able to provide transportation from Henry Crown Field House if you are unable/don’t want to drive to the site.

The BBQ will be held at the point later in the afternoon, around 1:30pm.

Please let me know if you will be able to attend the row and/or the BBQ. If you are able to come to the row, please also indicate which side you row to help in putting the boat together. Details will be provided as to the exact times, transportation, etc when I have a better idea of how many people will be able to attend.
