In true UChicago fashion, the crew team has taken an imaginative turn in their fundraising efforts, entering in a $10,ooo photo contest sponsored by Chipotle restaurants. They are in the finals and currently in the lead! Voting ends on Sunday, May 22. It will take you about a minute or so and will benefit the team.
Time to start making plans to attend the annual Alumni Row & BBQ, which will take place in Chicago June 4-5. The BBQ will be held in the afternoon on June 4, with the row the following Sunday morning. We’ve got some big news to announce and the launch of a major fundraising campaign. For the Class of 2001, this will be… our 10 year reunion. Are you coming? Hope to see you there!
Times for the Row and BBQ have been set:
Row: 9 AM, pick up from campus at 8:20AM. Pick up will likely occur at Henry Crown.
BBQ: 1 PM at the Point. Remember the days of FREE FOOD? You can live them again!
If you wish to make your own travel arrangements to the row or have any questions, please contact Chris Quintos.
So sign up today!
PS: Did I mention there would be free food at the BBQ?
Times have not been set yet, but the Alumni Row and BBQ has been scheduled for Saturday, June 6 during Alumni Weekend. There will be a row in the morning, followed by the BBQ in the afternoon. This can be a great opportunity to check out the new site, as well as meeting the current rowers and coaches of the team. I am sure you are all aware how quickly the faces of UChicago Crew can change, so contact Chris Quintos at firstname.lastname@example.org if you can make it. Look forward to seeing many of you there!
This year saw one of the most successful virtual team challenges ever. On the alumni side we had 15 participants–much more than at any time before–who together rowed 1,477,852 meters, where we placed 50th out of 250 teams. Not too shabby for our little team! Big thanks again go to Matt Healy, Andy Soyring, and Albert Bowers, who logged the most meters for our team. Us old folks have drive. With only 702,380 meters the student team wasn’t quite able to match our total, but in all fairness they had far fewer rowers participating. Together both teams rowed 2,180,232 meters!
This year’s event was held with a fundraising goal as well. So far we only have a few people who have pledged support and we are a little shy of the $1000 fundraising goal I set for this challenge. I know these are tough economic times, so any small amount you can donate would be much appreciated. All procedes collected from this year’s event will be placed in the new Alumni Fund, which will help form a new financial basis for the team and provide money in support of the team’s activities, including events for alumni. Please send checks directly to the team, written out to “University of Chicago Crew”. Remember to write January Erg Challenge in the memo line so we know who to thank! Al checks can be mailed to:
University of Chicago Gerald Ratner Center
5530 S. Ellis, Rm 141
Chicago, IL 60637
The team will also be participating in the the Chicago Indoor Rowing Championships on February 28th. If you’re in the area and can stop by to cheer them on or even provide goodies to the rowers, please do!
Thanks for all your support!
For those of you participating in the January Virtual Team Challenge, we came up with a couple of ideas to help motivate you in all those lonely hours on the erg:
1) If we can get everyone to complete a 6K piece by Monday in order to give out meter total an added boost while the student rowers try to catch up; and
2) On January 31st (or thereabouts) get everyone to complete a half-marathon (~21,000 meters) to push us over the top!
Onwards and upwards!
If you have any ideas for additional challenges during the month to help keep us all motivated, please let me know.
The January Virtual Team Challenge at Concept2 is underway and the meters are already stacking up. Still, we only have 3 people participating right now and we need a lot more! I won’t be satisfied until we hit the double digits in participation, so I’m counting on you. To take part go to: http://www.concept2.com/us/motivation/challenges/default.asp It will take you 5 minutes. There was one crucial detail I left out in the previous post (in bold below), so please read carefully:
- Set up an online profile at the Concept2 website.
- Email me with the username and email address you used to create the profile (only if you’ve never participated before). I need this to add you to the team.
- Make sure you sign up for the the January team challenge in your profile, under the “Teams” tab. This is necessary in order for your meters to count. You should also see “U Chicago Alumni Crew” as your team affiliation.
- Input your meters on the Concept2 website. You can add any backlogged meters rowed since Jan 1 by simply changing the date. The last date to input meters is Feb 5.
It’s that easy! Remember that the deadline for taking part in this challenge is January 15th at midnight. Please send me your information as soon as possible. If you have any questions let me know.
